Running Subversion on a Mac requires: first, a Subversion binary file, and secondly, either a lot of patience performing svn in Terminal or a svn gui/client. Here I will describe a basic installation of a svn binary file, installation of a GUI, and establishing a connection to the svn repository. Future use may require installation of a binary document processor, and perhaps some sort of file merge add-on. While this documentation is Mac specific, these steps should be applicable to PCs also.Installing a Subversion binary file will enable svn capabilities on your computer. Most GUIs for Macs recommend this universal binary file maintained by openCollabNet. openCollabNet will require you to log-in in order to download the file. You may need to create an account. Here you will find other popular options for binary packages.
After downloading the binary file of your choice, you may need to update/redirect your Mac to this new version of svn. If you have downloaded latest version of the openCollabNet binary file, open Terminal (Finder-Applications-Utilities-Terminal), and wait for your command line to load. Paste in this code after ~your user name$export PATH=/opt/subversion/bin:$PATH
If successful, you should see another command line ending in ~your user name$.
If you have chosen to download another binary file, be sure to check for specific instructions from your source's Read Me documentation for updating svn binary file path on your Mac.
To check whether you have updated svn correctly you may use this command:svn --version --quiet
The version number (1.6.12 for the openCollabNet file) should display.
After successful svn binary file installation, you may proceed to using svn via terminal (type in the following command for a list of actions: svn help), or go onwards to GUI Installation

There are many options for an svn GUI choice. Free non-demo GUIs for Macs are somewhat limited. Search on Google for a GUI that you may prefer. Below are instructions for downloading and installing two free non-demo GUIs that I found useful. svnX runs svn with its own browser, but can be cumbersome while SCPlugin is a GUI that integrates svn into your Finder as right menu options, but does not yet have a browser of its own for directory and log browsing.

Having and running both for different purposes may be appropriate as one has advantages the other doesn't.

You do not need to do this as you have previously installed a binary package above. The dmg file will mount itself once you open the file. However, there will be no installer. You will need to drag all the files in the svnX disk mount into your desired directory (i.e. Applications/svnX/) in order to have the program on your main volume.

Because Rice's svn is on an http, your computer needs to accepts its certificates in order to achieve access. Open Terminal again, and type in: svn list (the group's svn url)...
For example, for the group Goggles, svn list https://svn.rice.edu/r/Capstone/goggles/
You will be asked for your userid and password either after or before you've typed in 'p' when it prompts for your acceptation of svn.rice.edu's certificates.
